Our rainforests now have a host of new angels. Victoria Secret has taken steps to protect our forests.
The lingerie label’s parent company, L Brands, recently updated its sourcing procurement policy to reflect its commitment to ensuring forests don’t have to suffer for fashion. By the end of this year, the company hopes to be able to ensure it has weeded out any fabrics sourced from ancient and endangered forests, that contribute to deforestation or that contribute to human rights abuses.
“We are committed to working with our suppliers to source man-made cellulosic fibers produced from FSC certified forestry operations or, where unavailable, from certified forestry operations sources that are independently verified to meet our policy,” the statement reads, in part.
L Brands is answering the call of the Rainforest Action Network (RAN), which has been encouraging brands to take a responsible stance when sourcing fabrics. The group’s Out of Fashion campaign is designed to raise awareness of the 120 million trees used annually to make garments from rayon, viscose and modal. The group said communities in places like Indonesia are threatened by deforestation by the textile and fashion industries.
Ralph Lauren recently made a similar commitment. H&M, Levi Strauss & Co. and Zara are among the other fashion brands that have adopted policies to protect forests.
“It’s encouraging to see brands beginning to take responsibility for their supply chains,” Brihannala Morgan, senior forest campaigner with RAN, told Reuters. “L Brands’ commitments and actions, following right behind Ralph Lauren and among more than 60 other brands who have developed policies, can have a real positive impact for forests and the people that depend on them.”
