Trend: Activewear Brands Embrace Plus-Size Apparel

The one-size-fits-all approach is losing its ground in the activewear space.

Today, as wellness continues to take form in consumers’ lifestyles, many activewear brands, including Fabletics and Nike, have embraced size inclusivity. With extended sizes and exclusive plus-size collections, activewear brands are demonstrating that fitness garments aren’t limited to one body type.

Fabletics, the online activewear brand co-founded by Kate Hudson, said Monday that it’s adding extended sizes to its exercise clothing line. The company now includes sizes XXS to 3X for its range of performance apparel, including leggings, sports bras and jackets.

Reflecting Fabletics’ signature aesthetic, the new plus size collection includes contrast-color side panels for contouring, a flattering seam curvature, precise fit and optimal fabrications. Additional product enhancements include wider bands with adjustable straps, better bra top closures for added support and power mesh fabrications for breathability. The collection, which is sold on Fabletic’s website, includes more than 30 garments, like tanks, joggers and crop tops.

“When I started Fabletics, my goal was (and still is) to empower women and design with every woman in mind, because everyone—regardless of size, shape, age or ability—deserves to look incredible, be inspired and feel their absolute best. We don’t see this as the introduction of a separate line but an extension of our brand that now allows us to embrace all the amazing women who are, or want to become, part of our community,” Hudson said.

Nike is also making moves to expand its activewear sizes.

The sports retailer dropped its first plus size collection in March, which features a variety of garments for women sizes 1X to 3X. The collection, which features upward of 50 garments, includes performance fabric features like Dri-FIT, Nike’s advanced body-mapped cooling technology and flat seams for unrestricted body movement. The collection is available on and in select retailers in Western Europe and North America.

Nike also tapped athletes and fashion influencers, including hammer thrower Amanda Bingson, style muse Paloma Elesser, model Grace Victory and fashion blogger Danielle Vanier for the Plus Size collection’s campaign.

“Positive body image and self-confidence is something I advocate, not just for me personally but for every woman and young girl, no matter what their size,” Victory said. “It’s about time real bodies are celebrated.”
