Consumer interest in brick and mortar shopping seems to be picking up, or at least declining at a slower rate, according to the most recent store foot traffic data released by analytics firm Retail Next. It may be a glimmer of hope for physical retailers amid the onslaught from Amazon and other e-commerce players.
July store traffic fell by 5.5% year-over-year in the U.S., the smallest monthly drop since January 2016 and a significant improvement over June’s 8.1% decline.
Total sales in physical stores also dropped by their smallest amount in 18 months, down 5.3%, helped by a slight uptick in conversion.
Shopper yield (sales per shopper) decreased by 1.1%, while average transaction value fell by 2.4%.
Strong sales were recorded during the last weekend of the month, while weaker sales occurred around the Fourth of July holiday.
